Our verdict

MGM Rewards is free to join and genuinely useful if you spend on Las Vegas rooms, dining and slots in person, where Gold and Platinum waive resort fees and add travel credits. BetMGM play feeds it, but at the published rates it barely moves the tier needle: Pearl alone takes roughly $100,000 of online slot wagers. Worth joining. Not worth chasing through the app.

What works

  • Free to join, with Tier Credits earned on rooms, dining, shows and gaming
  • Gold and above waive resort fees when booking direct, per BettingUSA
  • BetMGM customers are enrolled automatically on registration
  • Pearl and above points do not expire, unlike Sapphire after six months idle

What does not

  • Online earn rates are low: up to 20 points per $100 on slots
  • Table games earn up to just 4 points per $100 wagered
  • Tier Credits reset every January 1, so status must be re-earned
  • Cash redemption is no longer offered, and earn details are largely undisclosed

Loyalty programmes sell a simple idea: spend with us and we will pay you back. MGM Rewards stretches that idea across hotels, restaurants, shows, slot floors and the BetMGM app. The question for a Las Vegas visitor is where the value really sits, and whether feeding the programme through online play is worth the trouble.

MGM's own rewards page would not load from our capture machine, so this review is a document-based analysis, not a stay-and-play test. We lean mainly on BettingUSA's detailed guide, supported by Pokerfuse and trade coverage of the relaunch. The arithmetic in the sections below is ours, built from their published rates. Programme terms change, so check the live rules before acting on any number.

You must be 21 or older to gamble, and BetMGM operates only in licensed US states. Nothing here is financial advice, and loyalty perks are never a reason to gamble.

Two currencies, and only one of them buys things

Pokerfuse draws the line clearly. BetMGM Rewards Points are a spendable currency. Tier Credits have no cash or redemption value; they only measure your progress toward the next status. A dollar of play can earn both, but they do different jobs.

Points are worth about a cent each on the standard scale. BettingUSA reports a 1.25x exchange: 2,000 points becomes roughly $25 of MGM Rewards Points or a $25 bonus. Cash redemption is no longer available, so what you get back arrives as play credit, hotel value or dining.

The tier ladder

According to BettingUSA, the thresholds are Pearl at 20,000 Tier Credits, Gold at 75,000 and Platinum at 200,000. NOIR is by invitation, and its requirement is not published. Sapphire is where everyone starts.

The perks grow with each step. Gold waives resort fees on direct bookings and adds a $100 dining experience. Platinum adds up to $600 of Las Vegas air credit, a $200 dining experience and suite upgrades for up to three nights. The cheaper benefits include birthday bonus bets on BetMGM, from $5 at Sapphire to $100 at Platinum.

Tier Credits reset each January 1. You keep your highest status through the following February 1, so each year is a fresh race.

What BetMGM play is really worth

This is the section that decides the verdict. BettingUSA's figures give slots up to 20 points per $100 wagered, table games and live casino slots up to 4, straight sports bets at least 20 and parlays at least 50. Tier Credits track the same rates.

Run the numbers. At 20 points per $100, a slot player earns roughly a quarter of one percent back at the 1.25x rate, about 25 cents per $100. Table games return around 5 cents per $100. To reach Pearl through BetMGM slots alone you would need roughly $100,000 in wagers, since 20,000 credits at 0.20 per dollar is $100,000. Gold would take about $375,000. Through table games the numbers are five times worse.

So the answer to the BetMGM question is plain: online play adds points and a few bonus bets, but it will not carry you to a status that matters. Resort stays, dining and in-person spend do the heavy lifting. Treat the app as a minor top-up, never as a path to tiers.

Small print that costs you

  • Earn rates are quoted as "up to" or "at least", and BettingUSA says MGM is careful to bury the detail.

  • Sapphire points expire after six months of inactivity; Pearl and above do not.

  • Casino and sports bonuses carry a 1x wagering requirement, and sports bonuses need odds longer than -200.

  • The 10 to 40 percent tier points bonus (Pearl 10, Gold 20, Platinum 30, NOIR 40) is listed in the tier table but reported as discontinued outside promotions. Treat it as unconfirmed.

Is it the best casino loyalty programme?

One travel-points blog, God Save The Points, argued that MGM Rewards had become the best casino loyalty programme. That is an opinion from a particular moment, and it rests on in-person value: resort fee waivers, air credit and dining. We would say the same about Las Vegas stays and a more cautious thing about online play.

Verdict

We rate MGM Rewards 7.0. It is free, it has real perks at Gold and Platinum, and the link to BetMGM is automatic. It loses points for thin online earn rates, an annual reset, no cash option and an earn system that hides its detail.

Join it if you visit MGM properties. Skip the idea of grinding through the app for status. Play within a budget you set before you start, and if gambling stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER.
